Last week, we talked about what a quiet mind is. And to experience a quiet mind is a peaceful, yep, blissful place to rest our awareness. That is the state of being we intend to experience when we sit down to meditate, but to expect to experience this type of bliss all day, everyday once we become skilled in meditation would lead to a boring, even a stagnant life.

This is not to say we want to live a lifestyle that involves constant chaos, absolutely not. But what we need to acknowledge is that we cannot control everything in our everydays, and that will be the case every day no matter how many or how few people or activities are happening around us. Our life becomes more enriched, and our mindfulness skills become further strengthened when we observe these unwanted moments and instead of scoffing at them or sighing in frustration, we put our skills into practice.

Andy Puddicombe described our decision to embrace the latter choice as seeing these events as “compost — if we use it correctly, can help us grow.” When we shift our perspective of moments in which our mind races or even becomes volatile to opportunities to grow, to note the upheaval in our mind and bring attention back to the breath so that it doesn’t snowball, we are giving ourselves a gift that will offer benefits multiplied down the road during future unwanted moments.

The hustle and bustle of life will continue. We don’t have to participate or practice this, but when we can’t change what is around us, we can see it as a place to practice our ability to bring our mind back to resting in awareness. When we can do that in our daily life, then we begin to realize how helpful meditating regularly has been.

~To conclude each meditation session, I encourage you to recite a mantra of your choosing and design. In the Contentment Masterclass, I share my example, which you are welcome to use, tweak, or look to as a template to design your own. Also provided to enrollees of the course is a free trial of the guided meditation app I use.
